Mental illness is much more serious than allergies, but so are cancer, heart disease, psoriasis, diabetes, and stroke. It’s high time for our society to consider mental illness no different than any other disease. It is simply a disease of an organ. Just like a disease of the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas or stomach. But this organ just happens to the most vital in the body—the brain. More serious than some others? Absolutely. Something to shun or judge people over, absolutely not!
People who judge those who commit suicide as “selfish” must never have been suicidal themselves which makes them very fortunate indeed.Sometimes suicide can be courageous and selfless. I know of a beautiful young woman who took her own life due to postpartum depression. The illness caused her to think she was capable of hurting her young children. So to “protect” them, she killed herself. Does that sound selfish?
I’ve battled clinical depression my whole life. But I didn’t know I had it until I was diagnosed at 40 year old.
The first time I remember wanting to kill myself was when I was in college. Normally, I don’t ever have a thought of killing myself. However, I’ve learned when I do, it’s because I’m going through a round of depression. I have learned how to deal with it. I cope with it just like other ailments I have from time to time like the degenerating discs in my lower back or the dandruff on my head. Unlike the dandruff ON my head, though, the depression is IN my head. I’m not ashamed of it nor embarrassed. It’s just something I deal with.💟💞💝💌You crazy! But you ain't as crazy as I am. As I said, over the years I’ve learned how to cope. For me, now without pharmaceuticals. I tried them all and had all the side effects you’ve heard on the TV ads like nausea, constipation, weight gain, diarrhea, insomnia, seizures, fainting, and INCREASED thoughts of suicide. I’m sure drugs help some people. But not this one. They almost killed me.💟💞💝💌You crazy! But you ain't as crazy as I am. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve learned to deal with it through lifestyle choices including diet, supplementation, exercise, meditations, and embracing truth. What I learned is that embraced and contemplated truth always causes forward movement in one's life. I learned this when I was bedridden, deathly ill with the depression.
It was about 9 years ago. I could barely speak. For you who know me, can you imagine how sick I must have been? My friend and mentor Mike Williams called me. He understood the darkness I was experiencing. He had battled mental illness for decades, having attempted suicide three times with six trips to mental wards.💟💞💝💌You crazy! But you ain't as crazy as I am. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you haven’t been suicidal, you have no idea what it’s like. It would be like trying to describe what chocolate tastes like to somebody who has never tasted chocolate. Really not possible. Everybody gets the blues, bummed out, is depressed from time to time. Clinical depression with suicidal tendencies is a whole different kettle of fish. So, I won’t try to describe it to you, except to say it is totally paralyzing. My wonderful brother Jimmy, who does not suffer from depression, couldn’t understand. Well-meaning, he said to me, “You’re a life coach. Get yourself out of bed and go for a walk around the block.” Seemingly great advice, right? But he might as well have said to me, “You know that rocket ship in your backyard that you built? Well, get in it and take a trip to the Moon”. That’s how nonsensical what he said to me was at that moment. And he wasn't the only one with that kind of advice
However, here is what Michael (who knew from whence I came) said. “Glenn, don’t do anything you can’t do. Don’t do anything you don’t want to do. Just experience it and know this—things are going to change. They may get better. They may get worse. But they’re not going to remain the same.”

A lot of people have the philosophy that “everything works out for the best”. That is not true. One could say, therefore, that as well-intended as that statement might be--it is a lie. In fact, it is total bullshit. Sometimes things do work out for the best, even oftentimes. But EVERYTHING does not work out for the best. Sometimes things work out for the worse! That is the truth. And when I heard it, and received it into my soul, it caused forward motion.
Truth is truth because it is applicable to EVERYONE, like gravity or the love of God. “My truth” is no real truth at all. Real truth is true for all humanity. And, again, when meditated upon at all, truth will move things forward for you mentally. Right then for me, moving things forward just meant not killing myself, getting out of bed and taking a shower.
Things, of course, did change. My brain slowly but surely started functioning better. I got better. But Mike’s “permission” to be sick and the truth he shared, is what got me over the hump. It saved my life. I’ve only been ill like that once since and am progressing every day in learning how to manage my particular challenges.
You shall know the truth and the truth shall MAKE you free.People often misquote that ancient text by saying that truth shall SET you free. But it says “make” not “set”.True freedom is a process which is begun by truth revealed and received. You know, truths like “All men are created equal”. And truths like “Things may get better. Things may get worse. But they are going to change.”💟💞💝💌You crazy! But you ain't as crazy as I am. AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, you Beautiful Humans, please know that now and always. Things may get better. They may get worse. But they will change!Share it with your friends and loved ones.
